In this exercise  I am using I am using a biro to draw these studies of thistles and and cherries, exploring the different qualities when compared to other drawing mediums.

Excercise Line drawing detail

Here using both  marker pens and or fine point artist pens I have drawn several object focusing on the line avoiding addition tonal values. That said I have blocked in the shadows on some of the drawings to appease the inner voice that said it will improve the composition.

Pine cone 1:

Pine cone 2 (same pine cone slightly different angle):

Apple:

Pepper 1:

Pepper 2 (here I roughly blocked in the various colour of the pepper, best colour match I could find given the limit choice I have of marker pens before applying my line drawing over the top):

Exercise Exploring coloured media

In this exercise I am exploring different coloured media without showing favoritism. I have always preferred soft pastels over oil pastels, though having used oil pastels for the 1st time since secondary school in this exercise I am  wondering were the dislike came from...really not that bad.

Doodling with coloured pencils

Doodling with pastel pencils

Doodling with felt tips. Like the way no real effort required to produce a mark on the paper, good for working quickly, and the fact that you are committing to the mark more so than with other medium given that mistakes can not be easily corrected

Doodling with ink intense block. Feel like a conte crayon but can bee mixed with water produce a ink like result:

Doodling again in a slightly more structured way with five different coloured medium

Here I used have used this exercise as excuse to work from a photo recently taken on my mobile phone of shadows being thrown by some trees. Haven't done the photo justice but is was useful to compare and contrast the different medium whilst working from the same source of reference.

Soft pastel. Liked the fact that the patches of pastel marks can be blended together... do not like the fact that this medium is easy to smudge

Felt tip pen, this drawing took the least amount of time to complete and  although the colours are not as natural, or as close to the colours in the photo as some of the other sketches it is my favourite, best reflecting the strong light source and shadows.

Coloured pencils, slower medium  in terms of coverage. The pencils I have although not cheap do not seem to blend as well as I would have hoped...gave up possibly a little to soon... blaming the tools as I tried to soften the edges of the shadows by going over them with a lighter colour

Oil pastel, enjoyed using this medium more than I had expected no longer regret the purchase... still don't  offer the same blending qualities of soft pastels.

Ink intense blocks, liked using these but concerned I could quite easily end-up  producing some that looks more like a water colour painting than a sketch that focuses more on mark making.  A touch of water blended into some of the tree trunks and shadows.
